My partner and I scored a complimentary day pass to a fitness center in the city. So we took the opportunity to spend an afternoon trying out classes, working with weights and fitting in a run on the treadmill with views of the city.
I was hyped to have a great workout, do my intervals along with some easy running. It didn’t happen as planned. I ended up trying a Jukari class which is Cirque du Soleil style workout. The class was okay but nothing as exciting as I thought it would be. Too much work on the floor and prancing around and not enough actual ‘flying’ as the workout claims to offer. Glad I tried it but I don’t think I’ll be going back for more in the near future.
Afterwards I moved to the free weights section. I don’t like doing weights on the machines as they don’t work the stabilizing muscles as well as free weights. Plus with three weights I can get creative. At this point I still had plenty of energy and managed to fit in a twenty minute workout.
The last stop was the treadmill, and while I had a great view of the city I couldn’t get the energy to actually complete the workout I had planned for myself. Normally when I run intervals I can jog during the rest periods, today it didn’t happen. I walked in between my 4x400m @ 14k/hr and I was still exhausted.
It’s impossible to predict the type of workout we are going to have each time as it’s impossible to know how we are going to feel on the actual day. The reason for my lack of energy today was my own fault. Firstly, I hadn’t eaten much throughout the day. Secondly, I was dehydrated. And finally, I was a little ill throughout the week and think that I’m coming down with a cold. Hopefully next week will be better. What is imporant to keep in mind is that not every workout has to be perfect. There will be good days, bad days and fantastic days. The most important thing is to show up and keep going.
