This morning Jarek and I decided to head down to the local farmer’s market. After recently reading way too much nasty stuff on how are food is produced I’m growing hesitant to shopping at large supermarkets. Do I really want to eat hormone swarming pesticide infested food? Ok, so maybe that’s a slight exaggeration and not all food in the supermarket is nasty but it has certainly made me question the items I put in the trolley.
The farmer’s market wasn’t what I expected. I thought it would be larger for a start, and secondly that it would have less processed food and more fresh stuff. Yes, there were enough fruit and vegetables, meat and seafood, and freshly baked wheat free bread but there were also sweet danishes, jam donuts covered in sugar, music playing and coffee being served. The farmers market was catering for all types of buyers, even those who just wanted to come for a stroll then sit down to a cup of coffee and some breakfast whilst listening to live music.
While we didn’t purchase much, I have to say I was impressed with one of the farmers selling tomatoes. In the last few months I haven’t enjoyed eating the tomatoes I get from the supermarket. They don’t taste like tomatoes should. Actually, they haven’t tasted like anything – dull and flavourless . I can only assume that it’s due to the mass production and excessive amounts of pesticides and other chemicals used to grow them.
Anyway, these tomatoes that we stopped to look it were rich in color and varied in sizes. Some small, some round, some out of shape. I asked the farmer about how they were grown and he told me naturally. I took his word for it and also noticed a lot of people buying from him so I thought, why not give them a try. I’m glad I did. Even at $10 a kilo, which is a lot, the tomatoes made a delicious salad to go with our breakfast this morning. These tomatoes were sweet and juicy and tasted as if they had just been picked. Yummy. I was impressed and I’ll be going back for more next week.
