I’m one of those people who functions better when they are super busy. Give me a week where I’ve got no where to be, no responsibilities to fulfill and I won’t get anything done. On the other hand, if I have a full time job, exams to study for and training to get done, I’ll do it all in a timely manner and still have hours to spare. How the heck does that work?
I suppose if you want something done you should always give it to the busy person. Soon, I’m going to be that busy person and I’m really happy about it. The only thing that worries me is how I’m going to fit my triathlon training into the mix.
When your situation changes – be it work hours, a new location, or an addition to the family – your priorities change and so does the amount of time you have for things like training. In order to fit all the cycling, swimming and running into an already hectic schedule takes organisation and time management skills, as well as a desire to succeed. I hope I have all those things covered and if not, I’m going to have to pick them up very quickly, no excuses.
In a week’s time I’ll be going back to work. I’ve been relaxing and lazing about for the past five months and have been slack in my training even though I’ve had plenty of time to get my butt into gear. Unfortunately, I haven’t. It’s not that I haven’t trained, it’s just that I haven’t trained as much as I could have. I guess you don’t realise what you could have and should have done until that time is over. But hey, that’s life.
As of the following Monday, my available hours for training will be between 5:00am-6:45am and 6:45pm-9pm Monday to Friday, and all weekend. With adequate preparation I should manage, I hope. I’ve read stories about triathletes getting up at 4:30am to fit in their training before heading to the corporate world for the day; runners have used their lunch time breaks to add an easy run; writers have written articles and books on their commute to work. Whatever the situation, it’s possible to fit it all in and make it work.
So, over the next few days I’m going to create a training plan and trial it for two weeks to see how my body and mind react and whether I can handle it with a new job, study and maintaining a social life. I’ll post the plan sometime in the next week.
How do you fit in training between full time work and a long commute?
