Valentine’s Day: the gift of love

IMG_3494It’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow. Yep, the ‘most romantic’ day of the year is upon us again with florists and shops stocked up with roses, heart shaped balloons, teddy bears, chocolates and red silk boxer shorts.

I love gifts. Diamonds are my preference. But on Valentine’s Day I prefer the simplicity. Yes flowers are a must, but there’s something about flowers that there’s always an occasion to give them. I love giving them and I love getting them.

A great Valentines Day would start with a run with J in the park or beach, followed by leisurely breakfast of eggs and bacon, fruit and croissants, and black coffee. We might read the paper, chat, and enjoy each others company. In the afternoon we’d go for a walk along the beach and grab some fish and chips and have a picnic in the park with the sounds of the sea in the background.

In an ideal world. But tomorrow is Friday. It’s a work day so the fantasy will have to wait for another year.

So what do you get the athlete in your life for Valentine’s Day?

  • a massage voucher to ease those aches and pains from all the tough training they’ve been doing (want to save money, make your own vouchers for at home massages from you)
  • guys, bake a heart shaped cake in your loved ones favourite flavour. It doesn’t matter whether the cake turns out or not, it’s the fact that you put in the effort that matters most
  • make a collage of all your loved ones races and print it on a canvas
  • sign them up for an upcoming race or two
  • if you have kids, offer to give your partner a break by looking after them so they can go for a run, swim, cycle or head to the gym for a few hours

What are your plans for Valentines Day? What would you give your athletic loved one for Valentines Day? Or is there something you’ve been given or would like to get/give?
